What does the job involve day to day?
The work starts with a process someone does by hand. A business analyst and a solution architect usually document it, and the developer signs off on the requirements with them. UiPath's career guide for the role describes a developer who builds automation components to match the solution design, tests the workflows with QA staff, writes technical documentation, and reviews code written by peers.
After the build comes the part people underestimate. The developer stays with the bot through production deployment, a hypercare period and ongoing monitoring. Bots fail when a screen changes, a login expires or an input file arrives in a new format. Much of an experienced RPA developer's week goes to diagnosing those failures and making the bot harder to break.
Exception handling and orchestration
A Google Cloud developer blog put the mindset well: testers build automations to break software, while an RPA developer builds automations to survive. That means planning for bad data, missing records and slow systems before go-live. UiPath's Orchestrator documentation treats business exceptions and application exceptions as separate cases. Put simply, a record that breaks a business rule is handled differently from a system that crashed.
Orchestration is how bots run at scale. UiPath describes Orchestrator as a web application that manages a fleet of robots, the resources they use and who can access them. Developers set up queues, time and queue triggers, and logs so that unattended bots pick up work on schedule and failures are visible. If you like operations and debugging as much as building, this side of the job will suit you.
Where do RPA developers work?
RPA fits organizations with large volumes of structured back-office work running across older systems. A Google Cloud blog listed financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, telecommunications, retail and the public sector as strong fits, citing tasks like invoice processing, call center workflows and employee onboarding. UiPath markets dedicated solutions to banking, including lending and financial crime compliance, and to insurance, where claims and loan paperwork are common targets.
For context on the wider field, BLS reports that finance and insurance employed about 11 percent of US software developers in 2025. That figure covers all software developers, not RPA specialists alone. Many RPA developers also work for consulting firms and platform partners that build bots for client companies.
How is AI changing RPA work?
Vendors are now pairing bots with AI agents. UiPath's own framing is that agents handle reasoning and judgment, while RPA carries out the actions reliably, especially in systems that lack APIs. In that model, a bot or workflow calls an agent only for steps that need interpretation, such as reading an unstructured email, and routes exceptions to a human for review.
For developers, this widens the job. UiPath's product team argues that core RPA skills, such as modular design, error handling, observability and safe execution, carry over directly to building reliable agents. Expect to spend more time on document processing, agent guardrails and human-in-the-loop steps, and less on screen-scraping simple tasks. Treat vendor claims about the future as marketing, but the direction of the tooling is clear.
Pay
USD a year, before tax. US figures from BLS OEWS May 2025, moved to 2026 with the Employment Cost Index, using software developers as the nearest series; it covers the whole occupation, not RPA specialists alone. Location, platform depth and seniority move the figure. Refer to the RPA & Process Automation salary guide for figures from live adverts.
What you need
- Programming basicsUiPath suggests starting with coding fundamentals in C# or VB.NET, though any language such as Java works. You need to read and write real logic beyond dragging activities onto a canvas.
- An RPA platformDeep working knowledge of one platform's studio, robots and orchestrator. For UiPath that includes Studio, Orchestrator and templates like the Robotic Enterprise Framework.
- Process analysisYou must understand a business process well enough to spot steps that suit automation and ones that do not. Analytical thinking and problem-solving are central to the role.
- Testing and debuggingYou test workflows before release and troubleshoot bugs found in QA and production. Exception handling is a core skill, not an extra.
- DocumentationYou write technical documentation for each automation so others can support it. Reviewing peers' code and handing over knowledge is part of the job.
- Optional certificationUiPath offers the UiPath Certified Professional Automation Developer Associate certification and a follow-on, the Automation Developer Professional. These replaced the older RPA Associate and Advanced RPA Developer certifications, which were retired in October 2023. They help show platform knowledge to employers that use UiPath, but they do not guarantee a job.

Questions people ask
Is an RPA developer a real software developer?
Yes, in the sense that the work involves logic, testing, debugging and version control. Platforms are low-code, but UiPath still lists a programming language as a core skill. Bots that run in production need the same discipline as other software.
Will AI agents replace RPA developers?
Vendors such as UiPath position agents as a layer on top of RPA, with agents making judgment calls and bots carrying out actions in enterprise systems. That shifts the job toward agent guardrails, document processing and human review steps. Developers who learn those skills widen their options.
How much does an RPA developer make in the US?
BLS has no RPA series. The nearest match, software developers, shows a US median of about $140,200 a year when moved to 2026. That series covers all software developers, so RPA-specific pay may differ.
Do RPA developers need a certification?
No certification is required to do the work. Vendor certifications, such as the UiPath Certified Professional Automation Developer Associate, show platform knowledge to employers that use that platform. They help most early in a career and do not get anyone hired on their own.
What industries hire RPA developers?
Organizations with heavy back-office volume running on older systems, such as banks, insurers, healthcare and the public sector. Consulting firms and platform partners also hire RPA developers to build bots for clients.
