How much does an RPA developer make?

Short answer

BLS has no RPA developer series, so the nearest match is software developers. Moved to 2026, that series puts US pay at a median of about $140,200 a year, with the middle half earning $108,500 to $177,400. It covers all software developers, not RPA specialists alone.

Why there is no exact RPA salary figure

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish wages for robotic process automation developers as their own occupation. The closest series is software developers, which BLS describes as people who analyze user needs and then design, build, test and maintain software. RPA developers do that work, aimed at automating business processes. So the figures here are an estimate. They describe the whole software developer occupation, and RPA specialists are only one part of it.

We also checked our own job board. On 5 November 2026, too few live RPA developer ads on AutomationRoles.ai listed a pay range for us to quote a figure responsibly. Because of that, this guide uses the BLS series only and gives no job-ad row for RPA work.

What the BLS numbers say

BLS reports that the median annual wage for software developers was $135,980 in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned under $82,460, and the top 10 percent earned over $214,670. We moved the May 2025 percentiles to 2026 using the BLS Employment Cost Index. Wages and salaries for civilian workers rose 3.1 percent in the 12 months to September 2026. That gives a 2026 median of about $140,200, a 25th percentile of $108,500 and a 75th percentile of $177,400.

Industry matters too. In May 2025, software developers at software publishers had a median of $164,550, while those in computer systems design and related services had a median of $132,050. Many RPA roles sit inside banks, insurers and large back offices. In finance and insurance, the software developer median was $135,460.

What moves RPA developer pay

Location is the biggest lever in the BLS data. California and Washington sit well above the national figures, and states such as Mississippi and South Dakota sit well below. Seniority is the next lever. A developer who only builds bots from a design gets paid less than one who scopes processes, designs solutions and owns production support.

Breadth matters as well. RPA developers who can also write ordinary code, work with APIs and add AI steps to their automations can apply for a wider range of roles. These figures are straight-time wages. They include commissions and production bonuses but leave out overtime and nonproduction bonuses, such as most annual bonuses. Stock grants are not part of the figures. Some contract RPA work pays by the hour instead.

What you need

  • Automation platform skillsYou need to know an RPA platform well enough to build, debug and maintain bots that run in production. UiPath runs a certification track built around this work.
  • Programming basicsVariables, control flow, error handling and some scripting all come up in day-to-day bot building. The more code you can write, the more complex the processes you can automate.
  • Process analysisMuch of the job is mapping a manual process, finding the exceptions and deciding what is worth automating. Clear documentation matters, because other people have to support the bots later.
  • EducationBLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for software developers as a whole. It does not say that every RPA role requires one.
  • Optional certificationAn Associate-level UiPath exam costs US$150 plus tax per attempt and a Professional-level exam costs US$300 plus tax. UiPath certifications stay valid for three years from the date you earn them.

How to get there

  2. Early careerJunior RPA developerBuild and fix bots from designs that someone else wrote. Learn how production support, logging and change requests work.
  3. Early careerConsider certificationIf you use UiPath, the Automation Developer Associate certification shows your baseline skills. It can help you get past a resume screen, but it does not get you hired.
  4. Mid careerRPA developerOwn processes from start to finish: scoping, design, build, testing and support. Pay usually rises at this stage.

Questions people ask

What is the median salary for an RPA developer in the US?

BLS does not track RPA developers separately. Using the software developers series as the nearest match, the 2026 median is about $140,200 a year. That figure covers all software developers.

Why doesn't this guide quote RPA job ads?

On 5 November 2026, too few RPA developer ads on AutomationRoles.ai listed a pay range to give a reliable figure. Rather than quote a thin sample, this guide uses the BLS series only.

Which states pay RPA developers the most?

In the software developers series, California has the highest middle range, at $141,300 to $223,500. Washington and New York follow. Mississippi, Arkansas and South Dakota sit near the bottom.

Are the old UiPath RPA certifications still valid?

No. UiPath retired the RPA Associate and Advanced RPA Developer certifications on October 13, 2023, and replaced them with Automation Developer Associate and Automation Developer Professional. Existing holders kept them valid for three years from that date, which means they lapsed in October 2026.

Does a certification raise RPA developer pay?

No public data links a UiPath certification to a specific pay increase. A certification can help someone new to the field show baseline skills, but production experience usually counts for more with employers.

Do these figures include bonuses?

Partly. BLS wage figures are straight-time pay that includes commissions and production bonuses but leaves out overtime and nonproduction bonuses, such as most annual bonuses. Stock grants are not included either, so total pay can be higher, especially at large technology and finance employers.
