What does an AI automation engineer do?

Short answer

An AI automation engineer removes manual office work. They link business systems through APIs, scripts and workflow platforms, and add large language models where a step involves messy input or a judgment call. The usual targets are IT, HR and operations processes. Factory PLCs and control systems are a separate field.

What the job involves day to day

You find a process people repeat by hand, simplify it, then automate it. 7shifts, a restaurant HR software company, describes the cycle in its AI Workflow Engineer ad. You sit with a team and learn how they work. You remove steps that serve no purpose. Then you build the workflow, connect existing tools through APIs and automation platforms, write documentation and guardrails, and track how much time it saves. The role reports to the CTO, which shows how close to the business this work sits.

The AI part comes in where rules break down. Databricks asks its automation engineers to handle unstructured inputs and decisions with LLM-powered workflows and agents. It also asks them to judge when a plain deterministic rule beats an LLM call, or when a mix of the two works best. In practice, much of the job is ordinary integration code: REST APIs, Python or Bash scripts, and data reconciliation between systems that were never built to talk to each other.

Typical projects

The Databricks IT asset management posting lists concrete targets. Automate laptop provisioning for new hires, with a goal of cutting manual ticket work by 75 percent. Watch SaaS license use and reclaim inactive seats, aiming for more than $1.5 million a year in savings and cost avoidance. Reconcile and deduplicate inventory records until they can pass an audit. Track hardware returns from people who leave the company.

Over time, that same Databricks role expands into IT support workflows, event support and incident response. At 7shifts the scope covers the whole company: any team whose hours go into repeated work is a candidate. Inside engineering, NVIDIA advertises a Senior AI Workflow Engineer role that applies AI agents to software development workflows to raise developer productivity and release reliability.

How this differs from industrial automation engineering

The title causes confusion. O*NET files Automation Engineer and Control Systems Engineer as sample titles under Mechatronics Engineers, an occupation that designs or tests intelligent systems, smart devices and industrial control systems.

An AI automation engineer works on business software: ticketing systems, identity platforms, CRMs, spreadsheets, databases and LLM APIs. Read the ad before you apply. If it mentions PLCs, SCADA or production lines, the job belongs to the industrial field.

Who hires AI automation engineers

Two groups show up most clearly in current ads. Large technology companies hire for internal operations, as Databricks does for IT asset management and NVIDIA does for engineering productivity. Software companies outside AI, such as 7shifts, hire one person to automate work across the business. 7shifts advertised its role on the n8n community forum and was open to a full-time hire or a contract.

Job titles vary. The same work appears as AI automation engineer, automation engineer, AI workflow engineer or AI automation specialist. Search on the tools and tasks in an ad as well as the title.

USD a year, before tax. These are US figures. BLS rows come from OEWS May 2025, moved to 2026 with the Employment Cost Index, and show the 25th to 75th percentile. BLS has no AI automation series, so the nearest one, software developers, stands in. It covers the whole occupation, not AI automation specialists alone. The last row is a single Databricks ad showing base pay for its highest-paid location zone. Bonus and equity come on top and are not included. Refer to the AI Automation Engineers salary guide for figures from live adverts.

What you need

  • Programming and scriptingAds ask for Python or a similar language. Databricks also mentions Bash as one scripting option, and 7shifts also lists SQL and databases.
  • API integrationYou need to be at ease with REST APIs and with connecting systems that lack built-in links, such as ITSM, identity and asset tools.
  • Workflow platformsAds name n8n, Zapier, Make, Workato and Tines. Both ads list example platforms followed by 'or similar', so experience on a comparable tool may count.
  • LLM experienceEmployers want hands-on work building workflows, agents or tools on large language models, including prompt engineering and agent frameworks.
  • Data handling and guardrails7shifts asks for attention to data privacy, security and access control, and for knowing when data should stay out of AI tools.
  • Business communicationYou have to learn a non-technical team's process, explain your work in business terms, and train people to maintain what you build.
  • Experience for senior rolesThe Databricks senior posting asks for 5 or more years in IT systems engineering, automation engineering or a related technical role.

How to get there

  1. StartLearn scripting and APIsGet comfortable with Python, SQL and calling REST APIs. Most of the job is integration code.
  2. EarlyPick up a workflow platformBuild real automations in a tool such as n8n, Zapier or Make, including webhooks and error handling.
  3. EarlyAdd LLM stepsUse LLM APIs to classify, extract and route unstructured input. Learn when a simple rule is the better choice.
  4. First roleAutomate a real processTake one manual process at work or for a client, simplify it, automate it and measure the time saved.
  5. SeniorOwn multi-system projectsSenior ads expect complex automation projects across several systems, with measurable business results and documentation.

Questions people ask

Is an AI automation engineer the same as an industrial automation engineer?

No. Industrial automation engineers work on control systems, PLCs and SCADA for physical production. AI automation engineers automate business software processes with APIs, scripts, workflow platforms and LLMs.

How is this different from an RPA developer?

RPA developers mostly build software robots that copy human clicks on a screen. AI automation engineers lean on APIs, integration platforms and LLMs that handle unstructured input. The two overlap, and many teams use both approaches.

Do I need a certification?

No certification is needed to work in AI automation, and none of the ads reviewed here required one. A vendor certification can help you learn a specific platform. Working automations with measured results show employers more.

Do I need to be a strong programmer?

You need working Python or similar scripting, SQL and API skills, because the ads reviewed here ask for them alongside workflow platforms. Most of these roles apply existing models to business processes. Some engineering-side roles, such as NVIDIA's, also ask for building predictive models and fine-tuning LLMs.

How much do AI automation engineers earn in the US?

BLS has no series for this job. The nearest one, software developers, puts the US middle range at about $108,500 to $177,400 in 2026 terms, with a median of $140,200. A single Databricks senior ad listed base pay of $143,400 to $197,100 in its top pay zone.
