What does an AI agent developer do?

Short answer

An AI agent developer builds software where a language model plans steps and calls tools in a loop to finish a task. The job covers tool design, orchestration, memory, evaluation, human approval steps and failure limits. The nearest BLS series, software developers, puts the US median at about $140,200 in 2026.

What is an agent, in plain terms?

Anthropic draws a useful line. In a workflow, your code fixes the path and the model fills in steps. In an agent, the model decides its own sequence and which tools to call. OpenAI describes the same thing as three parts: a model that reasons, tools that are functions or APIs it can call, and instructions that set its behavior and guardrails. Your job is to build all three and the loop that runs them, then keep that loop from doing damage when the model gets something wrong.

Agents are not the default answer. Anthropic advises starting with the simplest thing that works, which may mean no agent at all, because agents cost more, run slower and can compound errors. OpenAI points to three good fits: decisions full of judgment calls, rule sets too tangled to maintain, and tasks that depend on reading unstructured text. A big part of the job is saying no when a plain script or a fixed workflow would do.

What does the day-to-day work involve?

Tool design takes more time than most newcomers expect. Anthropic says its team spent more effort tuning tools than the main prompt while building a coding agent. You write clear tool descriptions, test how the model actually calls them, and change arguments so mistakes are harder to make, such as requiring absolute file paths. Orchestration comes next: OpenAI separates single-agent setups, where one model gains tools over time, from multi-agent setups such as a manager that hands subtasks to specialist agents.

Memory and context come next. Anthropic treats retrieval, tools and memory as the basic add-ons to a model, so you decide what the agent stores, what it looks up and what it forgets. Evaluation runs through everything. OpenAI suggests setting up evals first to get a baseline, hitting the accuracy target with a strong model, then swapping in smaller models to cut cost and latency. You also read traces, rerun failing cases and treat every bad output as a new test.

How do approvals and failure handling work?

This is the part that decides whether an agent ships. Anthropic recommends having the agent check real results at each step, such as tool output or code execution, pausing for a human at checkpoints, and setting stopping conditions like a maximum number of iterations. It also advises heavy testing in sandboxed environments before anything touches production.

OpenAI names two triggers for handing control to a person: the agent goes past a retry or failure limit, or it is about to do something sensitive or irreversible, such as canceling an order, issuing a large refund or making a payment. It suggests rating each tool by risk, using factors like read versus write access, reversibility and financial impact, and layering guardrails on top of normal authentication, access control and security practice.

Where do these roles sit, and how new is the title?

The title is young. Anthropic's widely cited agent guide came out in December 2024 and opens by noting that people define agents in different ways. BLS has no AI or agent occupation, so this work falls under software developers in federal data. LinkedIn data reported by the World Economic Forum lists AI Engineer among its fastest-growing jobs over the past three years. Agent work often sits inside that broader AI engineer title.

In practice you will find agent developers on product engineering teams that add agents to existing software, on internal platform or automation teams that connect agents to company systems, and in customer-facing roles such as forward deployed engineering. Frameworks help you start. Anthropic lists the Claude Agent SDK and the Strands Agents SDK by AWS, and OpenAI publishes its own Agents SDK. Both vendors say you can build these patterns directly in code without a framework.

BLS has no AI or agent series, so this uses software developers, the nearest match, which covers the whole occupation and not agent specialists alone. What you need

  • Strong software engineeringAgents are mostly ordinary code: API calls, data handling, retries, logging and tests. The model is one component of the system.
  • Tool and API designYou write tool definitions a model can use correctly, test them against many inputs and narrow arguments to prevent errors.
  • Evaluation skillsYou build eval sets that set a baseline, catch regressions and support decisions about model choice, cost and latency.
  • Safety and permissions thinkingYou rate actions by risk, gate irreversible ones behind human approval, and pair guardrails with authentication and access controls.
  • EducationNo credential is required for agent work itself. For the broader software developer occupation, BLS says a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field is typical.
  • No license or regulatorNo one licenses this job. Vendor certifications exist, but employers usually judge you on agents you have built and can explain.

How to get there

  1. Year 0-2Get solid at backend developmentLearn to build and test services that call APIs, handle errors and log what happened.
  2. Months 1-6 of AI workBuild with model APIsShip small features that use tool calling and retrieval, and learn how models fail on real inputs.
  3. Months 3-9Build a working agent end to endChoose one narrow task, design its tools, add a retry limit and an approval step, and write evals for it.
  4. Year 1-3Move into an agent or AI engineer roleJoin a product, platform or automation team, or a forward deployed role, where agents go in front of users.
  5. Year 3+Own production agentsRun multi-agent orchestration, risk ratings for tools, monitoring and incident review for systems people depend on.

Questions people ask

Is an AI agent developer the same as an AI engineer?

There is a lot of overlap. Agent developer is a narrower label for AI engineers who focus on systems where the model plans steps and calls tools. Many job ads for agent work still use the AI engineer title.

Do I need a framework to build agents?

No. Anthropic and OpenAI both say you can build agent patterns directly in code. Frameworks speed up the first version, and Anthropic advises cutting back abstraction layers as you move to production.

When should an agent hand off to a human?

OpenAI names two common triggers: the agent goes past a set limit on retries or failures, or it is about to take a high-risk or irreversible action such as a refund or payment. Anthropic also recommends human checkpoints and a maximum iteration count.

How much do AI agent developers earn in the US?

BLS has no agent category. Its software developers series, the nearest match, gives a 2026 US median of about $140,200, with the middle half earning $108,500 to $177,400. Those figures cover all software developers, not agent specialists alone.

Is there a required certification?

No. No license exists and no body regulates the job. Cloud and vendor certifications can help you show familiarity with a platform, but they do not stand in for a working agent you can demo and explain.
