How do you become an AI consultant?

Short answer

There is no license or required credential. Most AI consultants come in from management consulting, software or data engineering, or deep experience in one industry. Build two or three shipped AI projects with measured business results, then apply to a consultancy's data and AI practice or sell a small, fixed-scope first engagement.

Which route in fits you?

There are three common routes. Consultants who already work at a firm move into its AI or data practice and pick up the technical side. Engineers and data scientists who have shipped models or AI features move toward client-facing work. Industry specialists, such as people from finance, healthcare or operations, add enough AI skill to judge where it pays off in a field they already know. BLS notes that consulting firms often hire people with experience in the client's field, so domain depth counts for a lot.

Pick the route that uses what you already have. A strong engineer who can't run a client workshop has a different gap to close than an ex-strategy consultant who has never put a model into production. Close the larger gap first, because clients pay for judgment on both the business case and the delivery.

What should you build first?

Build evidence before you build a brand. Two or three finished projects beat ten tutorials. Each one should start from a real business problem, show the data you used, the approach you picked and the options you rejected, and end with a number: hours saved, error rate cut, or cost per case. Coursera's guide to AI consulting also advises a portfolio that shows projects, problems solved and outcomes for employers or clients.

Write each project up as a two-page client memo as well as a code repository. Consulting work is mostly framing, estimating and explaining. BLS lists analytical, communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills as important for management analysts. A memo that a nontechnical executive can act on shows those skills better than a notebook does.

How do consulting firms hire for AI work?

Large firms hire at two levels. Graduate analyst intakes are one. An Accenture Data and AI graduate ad, for example, asked for a master's degree, strong academic results, basic data literacy and strong written and spoken presentation skills. The second level is experienced hires, who are usually matched to an industry or a technical specialty. BLS says senior analysts may supervise teams and help win new business, and the strongest may become partners focused on bringing in clients and revenue.

Expect the work to be demanding. BLS reports that management analysts travel often to client sites, frequently work under tight deadlines, and sometimes work more than 40 hours a week. Pay at firms is usually a base salary plus a year-end bonus.

How does an independent get a first client?

Your first client almost always comes from people who already trust you: a former employer, a former manager who has moved companies, or a vendor you worked with. Offer a small, fixed-scope engagement with a clear deliverable, such as an assessment of one process with a costed recommendation. A two- to four-week scope is easier to approve than an open retainer.

Deliver it well, ask for a written reference, and turn the result into a case study for the next pitch. BLS says self-employed analysts are paid directly by clients, usually by the hour or by the project, and that 14 percent of management analysts were self-employed in 2025. BLS also expects growth to be strongest in smaller consultancies that specialize in an industry or a function such as information technology.

What you need

  • No licenseNo license or regulator covers AI consulting itself. BLS says management analysts don't need a certification, though one may give a jobseeker an advantage.
  • EducationBLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for management analysts, and says some employers prefer an MBA. Business, social science and engineering degrees are all common.
  • Related experienceBLS says many analysts arrive with several years of experience, and firms that focus on one field prefer hires from that field.
  • Delivered AI workHave finished projects with measured business results that you can explain to both engineers and executives.
  • CommunicationYou need clear writing, clear presentations and careful listening to understand a client's problem before you recommend anything.
  • Optional: CMCIMC USA awards the Certified Management Consultant credential. O*NET lists more than two years of experience, an oral or written exam, and renewal every three years.

Questions people ask

Do you need a license to be an AI consultant?

No. No license or regulator covers AI consulting in the US. Certifications are optional, and BLS says management analysts aren't required to hold one.

Do you need a degree to become an AI consultant?

BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for management analysts, the nearest occupation it tracks. Some employers prefer an MBA, and graduate programs at large firms may ask for a master's. Independents are judged mostly on their track record with clients.

Is the Certified Management Consultant credential worth getting?

It can help an independent show clients that an outside body has checked their competence and ethics. IMC USA awards it, and O*NET lists more than two years of experience, an exam, and renewal every three years. It won't replace a portfolio of delivered work, and it won't get anyone hired by itself.

How much do AI consultants earn?

BLS has no AI consultant series. Its management analysts series, moved to 2026, has a US median of about $105,100 and a middle range of $80,400 to $137,600. That series covers all management analysts, so AI specialists may sit in a different part of the range.

Should you start at a firm or go independent?

A firm gives you training, methods and a steady flow of clients while you build a record. Going independent works best once you have a network that already trusts your work and a niche you can describe in one sentence.
