How much does an AI consultant make?

Short answer

No US pay series covers AI consultants alone. The closest is BLS management analysts. Moved to 2026, that series has a median of about $105,100 a year, and the middle half of workers earn $80,400 to $137,600. Independent consultants are left out of these figures.

Where these numbers come from

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no occupation called AI consultant, so this guide uses management analysts as the nearest match. That series counts everyone who studies how organizations work and recommends changes, from operations and strategy consultants to analysts in government offices. Most of those people do not work on AI. Read the figures as a floor and a frame of reference. They do not describe pay for AI specialists in particular.

BLS reported a May 2025 median of $101,860 for management analysts. In May 2025 the lowest 10 percent earned under $60,640 and the top 10 percent earned over $171,640. We moved the percentiles to 2026 using the Employment Cost Index. That gives a 25th percentile of $80,400, a median of $105,100 and a 75th percentile of $137,600. All figures are US wages.

Employee versus independent consultant

BLS says management analysts at consulting firms usually get a base salary plus a year-end bonus. Your total pay at a firm depends on that bonus as well as the base. Ask how bonuses are set and what a typical payout looks like before you compare offers.

Self-employed analysts bill clients directly, usually by the hour or by the project. BLS counts self-employed workers as about 14 percent of management analyst jobs, but its wage survey leaves them out. No official figure for independent AI consulting rates exists, and we have not made one up. Independents carry their own costs: benefits, gaps between contracts, and the unpaid time spent writing proposals and bidding for work. Any rate you set has to cover all of that.

What moves the figure

Location matters. Massachusetts has the highest median in this series at $139,000, followed by the District of Columbia at $130,100 and Maryland at $125,500. In New York the median is $115,800 and the 75th percentile reaches $170,700. California sits near the national median at $104,600. Mississippi is lowest at $71,600.

Industry matters too. In May 2025, management analysts in professional, scientific and technical services had a median of $107,330, against $97,300 in government. Within a firm, pay rises with seniority. BLS notes that senior analysts may lead teams and help win new business, and the strongest can become partners.

How AI work fits into this

An AI consultant usually combines management analysis with technical judgment: deciding where a model or an automation is worth building, estimating cost and risk, and steering the rollout. Clients who need hands-on engineering may expect you to build prototypes as well. If your work leans that way, the software developer and solutions architect guides on this site may describe your pay better than this series does. BLS does not require certification for management analysts and says a credential may help you stand out.

Questions people ask

What is the median pay for an AI consultant in the US?

No BLS series covers AI consultants alone. The nearest is management analysts, which has a 2026 median of about $105,100 after moving the May 2025 data forward with the Employment Cost Index. That series covers the whole occupation, including consultants who never touch AI.

Do independent AI consultants earn more than employees?

Which state pays the most in this series?

Massachusetts has the highest median in the management analyst series at $139,000, followed by the District of Columbia at $130,100 and Maryland at $125,500. California's median of $104,600 is close to the national figure.

Does a consulting firm salary include a bonus?

According to BLS, management analysts at consulting firms are usually paid a base salary plus a year-end bonus. The BLS wage percentiles describe wages and may not capture the whole bonus, so compare total pay when weighing offers.

Do I need a certification to work as an AI consultant?

No. BLS says management analysts are not required to hold a certification, though one may give you an edge with some employers. Real results from past projects usually count for more.
