How much does an AI engineer make?

Short answer

BLS has no AI engineer series. Its nearest match, software developers, comes to a US median of about $140,200 for 2026, with the middle half earning $108,500 to $177,400. AI developer ads on AutomationRoles.ai show a higher median base of $203,000.

What the government data says

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track AI engineers as a separate job, so the closest series is software developers. That series covers every software developer in the country. It is the whole occupation, not AI specialists alone. BLS put the May 2025 median wage for software developers at $135,980. The bottom 10 percent earned under $82,460 and the top 10 percent earned over $214,670.

Moved to 2026 with the Employment Cost Index, that series puts the national median near $140,200. The 25th percentile is about $108,500 and the 75th is about $177,400. Industry matters. In May 2025, software developers at software publishers had a median of $164,550, compared with $132,050 in computer systems design and related services.

Why job ads show higher numbers

On 5 November 2026, US AI developer ads on AutomationRoles.ai had pay-range midpoints of $166,400 at the 25th percentile, $203,000 at the median and $243,000 at the 75th. That sample covers 21 ads from 11 employers. It is small, and it leans toward large AI and technology companies, which pay at the top of the market.

The BLS series counts all software developers, including people at banks, manufacturers and IT services firms who never touch a model. A job board for AI roles shows only open roles at employers that are hiring for AI skills right now. Treat the ad figures as a view of one corner of the market. They are not an average for the whole field.

Base pay against total pay

Both sets of numbers mostly show cash salary. The BLS wage survey leaves out nonproduction bonuses and the employer's cost of benefits such as health insurance and retirement contributions. Its respondent guide tells employers to exclude stock bonuses and profit-sharing payments. Job ads usually show only a base salary range.

At large technology employers, stock grants and bonuses can make up a large part of the package, so total pay can run well above base pay. When you compare offers, add up base salary, the yearly value of stock at today's price, any target bonus and any sign-on payment. Then look at the vesting schedule and benefits. A lower base with liquid stock can beat a higher base with none.

What moves your number

Location is the biggest lever in the BLS data. Moved to 2026, the software developer median is about $179,900 in California, $171,800 in Washington and $171,400 in New York. In Mississippi it is about $98,300. Remote roles often adjust pay to where you live.

Employer type comes next: software publishers pay more than IT services firms. Seniority and scope matter too. Engineers who ship models to production, run evaluations and own reliability tend to land senior offers. People who only wrap a model behind an API tend to price closer to general software roles.

What you need

  • No licenseNo license or regulator covers AI engineering work in the US. Cloud and vendor certifications are optional and do not set pay on their own.
  • EducationBLS says software developers typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field, and some employers prefer a master's degree.
  • Production software skillsOffers at the higher end usually go to engineers who can build, test, deploy and monitor software that runs real workloads.
  • Model and data skillsKnowing how to evaluate model output, handle data and control cost and latency is what separates AI roles from general developer roles.

How to get there

  1. Before applyingPick your benchmarkUse the BLS figure for your state as a floor and the job ad range as a view of what AI-focused employers post.
  2. During screeningRead the posted rangeNote the base salary range in each ad and ask early whether stock and a bonus are included.
  3. At offerPrice the full offerAdd base, yearly stock value, target bonus and sign-on, then check the vesting schedule and benefits.
  4. Before signingNegotiate on evidenceUse competing offers and your shipped work to argue for level and total pay. Base salary alone is a narrow target.

Questions people ask

What is the median AI engineer salary in the US?

BLS has no AI engineer category. Its nearest series, software developers, comes to a median of about $140,200 for 2026. AI developer ads on AutomationRoles.ai show a median base of $203,000, but that sample leans toward large AI and technology employers.

Why is the job ad figure so much higher than BLS?

BLS counts every software developer in every industry, most of whom do not work on AI. The ads come from employers hiring for AI skills now, and many are large technology firms. The ad sample is also small: 21 ads from 11 employers.

Do these numbers include stock and bonuses?

Mostly no. BLS wage data excludes nonproduction bonuses, stock bonuses, profit sharing and benefit costs, and job ads usually list base salary only. Total pay at large technology firms can be much higher once stock is counted.

Which states pay AI engineers the most?

Using the software developers series moved to 2026, California has the highest median at about $179,900. Washington follows at $171,800, then New York at $171,400. Lower-cost states such as Mississippi sit near $98,300.

Will a certification raise my AI engineer pay?

A certification can help you show cloud or platform knowledge to an employer, especially early in a career. It does not guarantee a job or a raise. Shipped work and interview performance carry more weight in pay decisions.
