What is the IAPP AIGP certification?

Short answer

The AIGP (Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional) is an IAPP certification covering how to govern AI across its life cycle, including law, risk and oversight. The exam has 100 multiple-choice questions and costs $649 for IAPP members or $799 for nonmembers. There are no prerequisites. To keep it, you need 20 continuing education credits every two years.

What the AIGP covers

The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) runs the AIGP. It launched the exam in March 2024, after starting AIGP training in 2023. The credential tests whether you can run AI governance inside an organization: set policy, assess risk, apply the law, and oversee systems from design through retirement. It is a governance exam. You will not write code or train models, but you do need to understand model types, deployment options and testing well enough to ask the right questions.

The current outline is body of knowledge version 2.1. It took effect on 2 February 2026 and replaced version 2.0.1. It has four domains. Domain I covers the foundations of AI governance: risks, responsible AI principles, roles and policies. Domain II covers how privacy, intellectual property, nondiscrimination, consumer protection and product liability law apply to AI, plus AI-specific laws such as the EU AI Act and South Korea's AI Basic Law, and frameworks including the OECD principles, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO 22989, 42001 and 42005. Domains III and IV cover governing AI development, then deployment and use.

Exam format and scoring

The exam has 100 multiple-choice questions. Only 85 are scored. The other 15 are unscored trial items, and you will not know which ones they are. About 30 percent of the questions are tied to case studies. Each question has four options and one correct answer. A blank answer counts as wrong, and wrong answers carry no extra penalty. IAPP lists 2.75 hours for the exam. Its candidate handbook calls the sitting three hours long, with an optional 15-minute break midway.

Scores are converted to a scale of 100 to 500, and 300 or higher passes. You get a pass or fail result as soon as you finish, along with a breakdown by section. Pearson VUE delivers the exam at test centers worldwide or online through its OnVUE remote proctoring. Book at least 24 hours ahead. You must schedule and sit the exam within one year of buying it, or you lose the fee. Questions per domain range from 16 to 20 for Domain I, 19 to 23 for Domain II, and 21 to 25 each for Domains III and IV.

Cost and keeping the certification

A first attempt costs $649 for IAPP members and $799 for nonmembers. Retakes cost $475 for members and $625 for nonmembers. You also get the retake price if you already hold another IAPP certification. For nonmembers, the exam fee includes the maintenance fee for the first term. IAPP also sells optional preparation: online AIGP training listed at $1,195, and a 100-question practice exam at $60, or $50 for members.

The certification lasts two years, starting the day after you pass. To renew, you submit 20 continuing education credits that match the AIGP outline and pay the maintenance fee. Membership covers the fee. Nonmembers pay $250 per term. You can carry over up to 10 extra credits if you earned them in the last six months of the term. If you miss either requirement, IAPP suspends the credential. If you leave it unresolved, IAPP revokes it, and you have to pass the exam again.

Who it helps, and what it won't do

IAPP says the credential suits people in AI compliance, risk management, legal and governance roles, data scientists, AI project managers, model operations teams, social scientists and trust professionals. In practice, it is most useful to privacy and compliance staff moving into AI oversight. It gives them a shared vocabulary with engineers, plus a structured view of the EU AI Act, NIST and ISO material that governance work depends on.

For an engineer, it is a way to show you understand the controls your systems will be judged against. It will not prove you can build anything, and passing it does not guarantee a job. No US law requires it for any AI role, and AI work has no license or regulator of its own. Treat it as evidence of governance knowledge. Pair it with real work, such as drafting an AI use policy or running an impact assessment.

What you need

  • PrerequisitesNone. IAPP does not require a degree, work experience or its own training before you sit the AIGP exam.
  • Exam purchaseBuy the exam from the IAPP Store before scheduling. You must sit it within one year of purchase or the fee is forfeited.
  • Passing scoreA scaled score of 300 or higher on a scale of 100 to 500. Only 85 of the 100 questions count toward your score.
  • Fee$649 for members or $799 for nonmembers on the first attempt. Retakes cost $475 or $625.
  • Continuing education20 credits per two-year term, matched to the AIGP body of knowledge. IAPP caps how many credits each activity type can count toward a term.
  • Maintenance feeIncluded with IAPP membership. Nonmembers pay $250 per term, and the first term is bundled into the exam fee.

How to get there

  1. Week 1Read the body of knowledgeStart from version 2.1, effective 2 February 2026, with its four domains. Older study material that lists seven domains reflects an earlier outline.
  2. Week 1Decide on IAPP membershipMembership lowers the exam fee and covers the maintenance fee at renewal. Compare its cost against the $150 exam saving and the $250 renewal fee.
  3. Weeks 2-10PrepareUse IAPP training, the practice exam, or your own study of the EU AI Act, the NIST AI RMF and the ISO AI standards. The exam and the training were written by separate expert groups.
  4. When readyBuy and book the examSchedule through Pearson VUE at a test center or online via OnVUE, at least 24 hours ahead and within a year of purchase.
  5. Exam daySit the examYou get your result immediately. If you pass, IAPP emails a digital certificate, usually within two weeks.
  6. Years 1-2Maintain itEarn 20 AI governance credits and keep the maintenance fee current before the two-year term ends.

Questions people ask

Do I need a privacy certification before taking the AIGP?

No. IAPP sets no prerequisites for the AIGP, so you can sit it without any other IAPP credential. If you already hold one, you get the lower retake price, and IAPP aligns your renewal terms.

How hard is the AIGP exam?

It has 100 questions, about 30 percent of them tied to case studies, and you need a scaled score of 300 out of 500. The questions focus mostly on recall, understanding and applying ideas to scenarios. Most candidates find the legal and framework domain the densest, because it spans privacy law, the EU AI Act, NIST and ISO standards.

Did the AIGP exam change in 2026?

Yes. Body of knowledge version 2.1 took effect on 2 February 2026 and replaced version 2.0.1. It names newer topics such as agentic AI, South Korea's AI Basic Law and ISO 42005, so study from the 2.1 outline if you test after that date.

Can I take the AIGP online?

Yes. Pearson VUE offers it through OnVUE remote proctoring, as well as at test centers worldwide. OnVUE is not available in some countries, and times depend on proctor availability.

Is the AIGP useful for engineers?

It helps engineers who work alongside legal, risk or compliance teams, or who want to move toward AI governance roles. It shows you know the rules and controls that apply to AI systems. It does not test coding or modeling skill, so it adds little to a purely technical application.

Does the AIGP count toward the Fellow of Information Privacy?

Yes, it can. IAPP's general handbook lists an active AIGP as one way to meet part of the FIP requirements. You also need an active CIPP credential and three years of continuous work with a substantial data privacy focus.
