Are AI certifications worth it?

Short answer

An AI certification pays off when your work runs on one vendor's platform. Exams cost about $150 to $300. Google certifications last two years, AWS and UiPath certifications last three, and Microsoft certifications are renewed every year with a free online assessment.

What a certification proves, and what it leaves out

A vendor exam tests whether you know that vendor's services and the right way to combine them. The Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam has 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions over two hours. The AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam (MLA-C01) has 65 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions over 130 minutes. Both are multiple-choice tests. Neither one asks you to debug a failing training job, clean a messy dataset or explain a model's errors to a product team.

So a pass tells a hiring manager you studied a platform's toolset and can reason about its design choices. It says little about judgment, code quality or whether you have run a model in production. The issuers know this. Google recommends three or more years of industry experience before its ML exam, and AWS writes its associate exam for people with at least a year of hands-on time on its ML services. A certification works best as a summary of experience you already have.

Which roles get the most from one

Platform-bound roles get the clearest return. AWS lists ML engineers, MLOps engineers, data engineers, backend developers and data scientists as the people its ML associate exam is written for. If a job ad names one cloud and your resume shows a different one, a certification on the named cloud closes that gap quickly.

RPA is the strongest case. RPA developers build almost entirely inside one vendor's product, and UiPath runs a tiered program with associate and professional exams. Consultants who deliver on one vendor's stack also get value, because a client cannot easily inspect your past work and a vendor credential is a fast, checkable signal. Research scientists and engineers doing model work get the least, since their hiring leans on papers, code and past results.

Cost against benefit

The exam fee is the smallest cost. The AWS ML associate exam (MLA-C01) costs $150. The Google Cloud ML engineer exam costs $200 plus tax. UiPath prices its professional-level exams at $300. Study time is the larger cost, often weeks of evenings, and then upkeep. Google's certification lasts two years. AWS and UiPath certifications last three. Microsoft lets you renew eligible certifications once a year at no cost by passing a short online assessment.

Survey data on pay is mixed and comes from the testing industry. Coursera, citing the Pearson VUE 2025 Value of IT Certification report, says 32 percent of IT professionals got a raise after certifying. That also means most did not. If your employer pays the fee and gives study time, the math is easy. If you are paying yourself to break into AI with no experience, a portfolio project is usually the better use of the same hours.

Exams change often, so check what is current

AI certifications are retired and rewritten quickly, and stale study plans are common. AWS retired its Machine Learning - Specialty certification, and the last day to sit that exam was March 31, 2026. Existing holders stay certified for three years from the date they passed. AWS is also replacing the ML associate exam: English delivery of MLA-C01 ended September 28, 2026, and the updated MLA-C02 was in English-only beta at $75 when we read the page.

UiPath stopped recognizing its older RPA Associate and Advanced RPA Developer certifications after October 2026. Holders now need the newer Automation Developer Associate or Professional credentials. Microsoft has added Applied Skills, which are short lab-based assessments of one skill, alongside its role-based certifications. Before you study, confirm the exam code on the issuer's page.

What you need

  • Hands-on platform timeGoogle recommends 3+ years of industry experience, including at least a year on Google Cloud, before its ML engineer exam. AWS writes its ML associate exam for people with at least one year on its ML services.
  • A target job, namedPick the certification that matches the cloud or RPA product in the ads you want. A credential on a platform no employer near you uses adds little.
  • Budget for fees and retakesPlan on $150 to $300 per attempt at the major vendors, plus practice tests. Ask your employer to cover it before you pay yourself.
  • A recertification planGoogle certifications last two years, and AWS and UiPath certifications last three. Microsoft renews eligible certifications yearly through a free online assessment.
  • Portfolio evidence alongsidePair the credential with at least one working project, such as a deployed model or an automation with real users, that you can walk through in an interview.

How to get there

  1. Months 1-4Build something firstShip one or two small, real projects on the platform you are targeting. This gives you the hands-on time the exams assume.
  2. Month 4Match the credential to job adsRead 20 ads for your target role and note which cloud or RPA vendor they name. Choose that vendor's exam.
  3. Before bookingCheck the current exam codeConfirm on the issuer's page that the exam has not been retired or replaced. AWS changed its ML exams in 2026, and UiPath's older RPA certifications stopped being valid in October 2026.
  4. Months 5-6Study and sit the examUse the issuer's exam guide and practice test. Book only when practice scores are steady.
  5. After passingShow both on your resumeList the certification next to the project that used the same platform, so the two support each other.
  6. Every 1-3 yearsKeep it currentRecertify before expiry if the credential still matches your work. Let it lapse if you have moved to another platform.

Questions people ask

Will an AI certification get me hired?

No credential guarantees a job. A certification can get your resume past a filter that asks for a named platform, and it gives you a common vocabulary in interviews. Hiring decisions in AI still turn on what you have built and how well you explain it.

Is a certification or a portfolio better for breaking into AI?

For someone with no AI experience, a portfolio usually comes first. The major ML exams are written for people who already have one to three years of hands-on platform time, so the project work also prepares you for the exam.

Is the AWS Machine Learning Specialty still available?

No. AWS retired it, and the last day to take the exam was March 31, 2026. People who earned it stay certified for three years from their pass date. AWS points ML candidates to the Machine Learning Engineer - Associate certification instead.

Are my old UiPath RPA certifications still valid?

UiPath recognized the RPA Associate and Advanced RPA Developer certifications only until October 2026, and they no longer validate after that. The replacements are the Automation Developer Associate and Automation Developer Professional certifications, which last three years.

Do AI certifications raise pay?

Some people report a raise. Coursera, citing Pearson VUE's 2025 Value of IT Certification report, says 32 percent of IT professionals got a salary increase after certifying. That is survey data from the testing industry and does not show the certification caused the raise.

What is a Microsoft Applied Skills credential?

It is a short, lab-based assessment of one specific skill, earned by completing tasks rather than answering exam questions. Microsoft says Applied Skills sit alongside its role-based certifications and do not replace them.
