Student GenAI Engineer
Abacus Medicine GroupAbout the role
As a GenAI Working Student, you will work directly with experienced AI professionals and gain practical exposure to modern Generative AI development. From experimenting with LLMs and RAG architectures to contributing to production-ready AI applications, you will be involved in projects that go beyond research and deliver tangible value to the business. The role offers a unique opportunity to accelerate your technical growth while working with some of the most exciting technologies in the AI landscape.
Responsibilities
- Get hands-on with the full GenAI development stack: LLM integration, retrieval-augmented generation, vector stores, and evaluation of model outputs.
- Work alongside a GenAI Engineer on development tasks within live projects. Implement and test individual components, contribute to RAG pipelines, prompt experiments, fine-tuning and agent orchestration.
- Ship solutions that run in production. Your work is part of real automations used by colleagues across the company, not just internal demos.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in a technical or quantitative field (computer science, data science, software engineering, mathematics, or similar).
- Strong Python skills. You have written scripts or notebooks that do something real with data or models, not just following a tutorial.
- Some familiarity with LLM frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar), RAG pipelines or vector databases. You have read about or experimented with these.
- Comfortable working in English in a professional setting, written and verbal.
- A genuine passion for Generative AI and a strong curiosity about how modern AI systems work beyond basic API usage.
- A proactive and hands-on mindset, with experience building projects independently through academic work, internships, personal initiatives, or side projects.
- The ability to work in an iterative way by asking questions, forming hypotheses, testing ideas, and continuously improving solutions.
- An interest in understanding the underlying architecture and protocols behind GenAI systems, including concepts such as MCP, RAG, and agent-based workflows.
Nice to have
- Exposure to software engineering best practices, including version control (Git), testing methodologies, code reviews, and collaborative development workflows.
- Experience working with Python on practical data, machine learning, or AI-related projects.
- Familiarity with LLM frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar technologies, as well as vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation architectures.
- An interest in or understanding of how AI solutions are designed, deployed, and scaled within enterprise environments.
- Experience moving from exploratory notebook-based development toward building structured, maintainable, and production-oriented code.
What we offer
- A part-time position: up to 20 hours per week
- Flexible working hours
- Attractive hourly wage of €17
- A supportive, collaborative team with real opportunities to make an impact
- Opportunity to transition into a full-time position after graduation
- 30 days of annual leave (pro rata for part-time employees), plus additional paid time off on New Year's Eve and during the company closure on 24 December, depending on your regular working schedule
- Deutschlandticket (Germany-wide public transport pass) for your commute
- Subsidized lunch, coffee, and fresh fruit in the office
- Access to the OpenUp platform to support your mental well-being
