Why You'll Thrive at Varicent

  • Innovate with Purpose: Build impactful solutions for customers worldwide.
  • Join Excellence: Work in a diverse, collaborative, and innovative team.
  • Shape the Future: Lead in redefining revenue optimization.
  • Grow Together: Unlock your potential in a supportive environment.

About the Role

As Staff Software Developer, GenAI, you'll play a critical role in building and scaling production-grade AI systems that directly impact how customers use and experience Varicent's products. You'll contribute to the design and delivery of GenAI-powered features, collaborate closely with technical leads and senior stakeholders, and help set the technical bar for quality, reliability, and scalability across a core product area.

This role is ideal for a senior engineer who thrives in complex systems, enjoys solving ambiguous problems, and wants to apply modern AI technologies in real-world, high-impact products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own AI-enabled components end-to-end and deliver measurable improvements in quality and reliability. Operate independently, drive design decisions within your area, and help establish strong engineering standards through reviews, mentorship, and technical leadership.
  • Own delivery for significant features or systems — clarify requirements, design solutions, implement, ship, and iterate in production.
  • Build and maintain reliable services, APIs, and workflows that support GenAI features at scale.
  • Define and automate quality metrics for your area, including success metrics, test strategies, and evaluation approaches.
  • Run structured experiments, interpret results, and translate learnings into tangible product improvements.
  • Improve operational readiness through deployment automation, monitoring and alerting, incident analysis, and performance or cost optimization.
  • Mentor and guide other engineers through design feedback, code reviews, and hands-on technical leadership.

GenAI Expectations

  • Solid working knowledge of how modern AI applications are built and evaluated, including core concepts, system trade-offs, and practical limitations.
  • Strong learning velocity — able to assess new models, tools, and frameworks, and recommend pragmatic solutions based on impact, feasibility, and ROI.
  • Build systems that are safe and compliant by design, with strong consideration for privacy, data handling, and responsible AI practices, in partnership with Legal and Security teams.

How We Work

  • Balance exploration with delivery — test ideas quickly, then productionize what works.
  • "Done" means quality goals are met, followed by continuous improvement in accuracy, cost, performance, and reliability.
  • The team owns systems end-to-end, including build, release, and operational reliability.

Required Experience

  • 6+ years of overall software engineering experience, with at least 3+ years building and shipping production systems in product teams.
  • 5+ years of hands-on technical experience writing production-quality code.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including system design, distributed systems, and scalable architecture.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript (or similar), building APIs, services, and data pipelines.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and observability.
  • Experimentation mindset — able to define metrics, build evaluation frameworks, and iterate quickly in ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Passion for learning and applying GenAI technologies in practical, production environments.

Nice to Have

  • Hands-on GenAI/LLM experience: prompt engineering, retrieval/RAG, embeddings, tool or function calling, fine-tuning, or evaluation pipelines.
  • Familiarity with LLMOps practices: experiment tracking, version control for prompts/models, and cost or latency optimization.
  • Experience with tools such as LangChain/LangGraph, OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, and vector databases like Pinecone, FAISS, or Milvus.
  • Contributions to open source, technical blogs, or conference talks.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
