What the job involves day to day
The UK government's digital and data framework gives a clean definition: an ML engineer builds, assures and maintains models so that products and services can use them. In practice that means you own the software and infrastructure for the whole model life cycle. You design, train, deploy and scale models, and you help product teams decide which ML approach fits their problem. Most days mix coding, running experiments, reading metrics and fixing pipelines.
AWS's exam guide for its ML engineer associate certification, MLA-C02, lists the same tasks in the order you would meet them. You ingest, transform and validate data. You choose a modeling approach, train, tune hyperparameters, analyze performance and manage model versions. Then you pick deployment infrastructure, set up autoscaling and build CI/CD pipelines. After launch you monitor models, data and infrastructure for problems, and you secure the system. The current version also covers foundation models and agentic workflows.
Data preparation, training and evaluation
Data work takes the biggest share of the job. In the AWS exam, data preparation is the largest domain at 28 percent of scored content. Model development, deployment and orchestration, and operations and security each account for 24 percent. That split matches what most of us see at work: models fail more often from bad inputs than from bad architectures. You write the code that cleans, validates and versions data, so a training run can be repeated and a result can be trusted.
Evaluation is where an ML engineer earns trust. You decide which metrics match the business goal, test models against held-out data, and check that results hold up after retraining. The UK framework says a senior ML engineer decides which model suits a product, then customizes, optimizes, retrains and maintains existing models. That last part matters. A lot of the job is improving models that already exist, and building new ones from scratch is a smaller part.
Deployment and monitoring
A model that only runs in a notebook has no value to the business. ML engineers package models, deploy them to production, test them against performance requirements, and connect them to the systems around them. The UK framework says a lead ML engineer coordinates moving a model from research into production and defines ways of working across the life cycle.
After launch, you check that live models stay safe, secure and accurate. Input data drifts, costs creep up and latency changes, so you set up logging and alerts and plan retraining. This operational side is where ML engineering looks most like DevOps. The UK framework lists the DevOps engineer as a role that shares programming and systems integration skills with ML engineers.
How it differs from data science and software engineering, and who hires
The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes data scientists as people who pull insights from data, build and test models, present findings, and make recommendations to stakeholders. ML engineers build models too, but their output is a running system, while a data scientist's output is often an analysis or a decision. Software developers, in BLS terms, design, build, test and maintain applications. An ML engineer does that same software work, with statistics, data pipelines and model behavior added on top.
BLS has no ML engineer series. In its broader software developers occupation, the largest employers in 2025 were computer systems design firms at 29 percent of jobs, then finance and insurance at 11 percent, software publishers at 10 percent and manufacturing at 8 percent. On this board, the 139 live US ML engineer ads on 5 November 2026 came from 56 employers. Governments hire ML engineers too. The UK civil service maps the role to two levels, senior and lead.
Pay
USD a year, before tax. The BLS rows come from OEWS May 2025, moved to 2026 with the Employment Cost Index. They use the software developers series, the nearest match, which covers the whole occupation and not ML engineers alone. The job ad rows are midpoints of US dollar ranges in 139 live AutomationRoles.ai ads from 56 employers on 5 November 2026. Those ads lean toward large AI and tech employers and show base pay only, without stock or bonus. All figures are US figures. Refer to the Machine Learning Engineers salary guide for figures from live adverts.
What you need
- Software engineeringYou write production code that is modular, tested and deployable. AWS lists software engineering best practices, CI/CD and infrastructure as code as expected knowledge for its ML engineer exam.
- ML fundamentalsYou need to know common ML algorithms and where each one fits, plus what foundation models can and cannot do. Training, tuning and versioning models are core tasks.
- Data engineering basicsYou should know common data formats and how to ingest, query and transform data for ML pipelines, since data preparation is the largest share of the work.
- Applied statisticsThe UK framework expects practitioner-level applied math and statistics, such as time series analysis, optimization and simulation, to build models for prediction.
- CommunicationYou explain model behavior and tradeoffs to people outside engineering and manage what they expect. The UK framework rates this skill at expert level for lead ML engineers.
- Optional certificationThere is no license for this job. Cloud certifications such as Google Cloud's Professional Machine Learning Engineer can show platform skill, but they do not guarantee a job offer.
How to get there
- FirstBuild a software or data baseMost ML engineers arrive from a neighboring role. AWS's exam guide expects at least a year in a role such as backend software developer, DevOps developer, data engineer or data scientist.
- Alongside workLearn the model life cyclePractice the full loop on real data: clean it, train, evaluate honestly, deploy behind an API, and monitor results.
- Before switchingTake ML work in your current jobVolunteer to productionize a model, own a data pipeline, or add monitoring to something already live. Shipped work counts for more in interviews than course certificates.
- First ML roleMove into an ML engineer roleIn the UK civil service framework, the first named level is senior ML engineer. That person chooses models, retrains them, deploys them and keeps them working in production.
- LaterGrow toward leadLead ML engineers move models from research into production, set ways of working, and define standards for ethics, risk and security.

Questions people ask
Is a machine learning engineer the same as a data scientist?
No. The two roles overlap. BLS describes data scientists as people who analyze data, build models and give recommendations to stakeholders. ML engineers focus on getting models into production and keeping them reliable, so their work sits closer to software engineering.
Do machine learning engineers need a license?
No. No license or regulator covers ML engineering work itself. Certifications from cloud providers are optional and mainly show skill on that provider's platform.
How much does a machine learning engineer make in the US?
BLS has no ML engineer series. Its nearest match, software developers, has a US median of about $140,200 in 2026 terms. Live US ML engineer ads on AutomationRoles.ai had a median pay midpoint of $227,400, but those ads lean toward large tech employers and show base pay only.
Which certification fits an ML engineer?
Google Cloud's Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam costs $200, lasts 2 hours, and stays valid for 2 years. Google recommends 3 or more years of industry experience. AWS offers the Machine Learning Engineer Associate certification. Its updated exam, MLA-C02, is in beta: English only, 170 minutes, 85 questions, $75 at beta pricing. AWS retired the older MLA-C01 exam in English on 28 September 2026, but MLA-C01 stays open in Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese until MLA-C02 is generally available. The new exam covers data preparation, model development, deployment and operations, including foundation models and agentic workflows.
Is demand for ML-related work growing?
BLS projects software developer jobs to grow 15.8 percent from 2024 to 2034, and data scientist jobs to grow 33.5 percent over the same period. BLS links part of this growth to AI adoption. It does not publish a separate projection for ML engineers.
