What actually changes between the two jobs
An analyst mostly explains what already happened. You write SQL, build dashboards and answer questions from managers. Databricks draws the line the same way: analytics uses SQL and BI tools to look back, and data science builds models that predict and automate future decisions. Its list of typical analytics titles includes analytics engineer and BI analyst.
The data scientist task list in O*NET makes the shift concrete. The top tasks still include cleaning data, making charts and presenting results, so most of your analyst habits carry over. The new work is testing, validating and reworking models, comparing them with metrics such as loss functions or explained variance, applying feature selection, and writing code to run analyses. O*NET puts business intelligence analysts under code 15-2051.01, a subcode of data scientists, so the two jobs share a family. The difference is depth.
The skill gap, in order of payoff
Python comes first because employers ask for it. In Lightcast data from 2025 job ads, as shown by O*NET, 66% of US ads linked to data scientists mentioned Python, 51% mentioned SQL, 34% mentioned R and 22% mentioned Tableau. Most analysts already have SQL. Get comfortable writing Python for a whole analysis, from loading data through to a fitted model, and keep the code in version control.
Next comes statistics past the descriptive level: sampling, hypothesis tests, confidence intervals, regression and the reasons a model overfits. BLS calls the field heavy on math and statistics. Then modeling. Learn to split data, cross-validate, pick a metric that fits the business cost, and say why one model beats another. Last is experiment design. O*NET lists applying sampling techniques and designing surveys among data scientist tasks. If your company runs A/B tests, learning to plan and read them is the quickest way to show this skill.
How to use the job you already have
Your current role is the best training ground because you already have the data, the business context and people who trust you. Pick a recurring question you answer by hand, such as which customers churn or what next month's demand will be, and build a simple predictive model for it. Compare it with the current rule of thumb, write up the results, and present them the way you present dashboards now.
Ask to sit in on experiment reviews, offer to check power and sample size for upcoming tests, and pair with any data scientist on your team. Rewrite one of your reports as a Python pipeline. Six months of this gives you real projects with measured results, which interviewers will dig into. It also opens the door to an internal transfer, which is usually easier than getting hired cold from outside.
What happens to pay
BLS reports a May 2025 median of $120,230 for data scientists. Moved to 2026, the national middle half earns about $88,300 to $163,900. That BLS code includes business intelligence analyst work, so the official numbers understate the gap between dashboard work and modeling work. Live data scientist ads on AutomationRoles.ai advertise much higher base pay, with a median midpoint of $202,500. Those ads lean toward large AI and technology employers, though, so treat them as the high end of the market.
Pay
USD a year, before tax. US figures. BLS rows come from BLS OEWS May 2025 for the whole data scientists occupation, not AI specialists alone, moved to 2026 with the Employment Cost Index. Job ad rows are midpoints of base pay ranges in live AutomationRoles.ai ads on 5 November 2026 (63 ads, 27 employers), which lean toward large AI and technology employers and leave out stock and bonus. Refer to the AI Data Scientists salary guide for figures from live adverts.
What you need
- EducationBLS says data scientists typically need at least a bachelor's degree in math, statistics, computer science or a related field. Some employers require or prefer a master's or doctorate.
- PythonPython was the most requested software skill in 2025 US data scientist ads in Lightcast data shown by O*NET, at 66%. You need to be able to write a full analysis in it.
- SQLSQL appeared in 51% of those ads. Most analysts already have it, and it stays part of the job.
- StatisticsExpect questions on hypothesis tests, regression, sampling and uncertainty. BLS describes data science as requiring extensive study in math and statistics.
- Modeling and validationO*NET lists testing, validating and comparing models with statistical performance metrics as core tasks. Learn train and test splits, cross-validation and metric choice.
- Experiment designKnow how to plan a test, size the sample and read the result honestly. O*NET lists applying sampling techniques and designing surveys among data scientist tasks.
- CommunicationBLS names communication as a key quality. You still present results to people who don't work with data, which is a strength analysts already have.
How to get there

Questions people ask
Do I need a master's degree to move from data analyst to data scientist?
BLS says data scientists typically need at least a bachelor's degree, and that some employers require or prefer a master's or doctorate. So a master's helps with some employers but is not a universal rule. Proven modeling work in your current job can carry a lot of weight.
Is Python or R better for the switch?
Both show up in ads, but Python shows up far more often. In 2025 US ads linked to data scientists, O*NET's Lightcast data shows Python in 66% and R in 34%. If you have to pick one, Python covers more openings.
How much more does a data scientist earn than a data analyst?
There's no clean official comparison, because O*NET files business intelligence analysts under the same code family as data scientists. For the whole BLS data scientist occupation, the US median moved to 2026 is about $124,000. Data scientist ads on AutomationRoles.ai show a median base-pay midpoint of $202,500, but they lean toward large tech employers and leave out stock and bonus.
What does a data scientist do day to day that an analyst doesn't?
More time goes into building, testing and comparing predictive models and into writing code. O*NET lists tasks like validating models, comparing them on performance metrics and applying feature selection. Presenting results and recommending actions stay part of the job.
Is the data scientist job market growing?
BLS projects data scientist employment to grow 35% from 2025 to 2035. It expects about 24,800 openings a year on average over that decade.
Do certifications help an analyst become a data scientist?
A certification can give structure to your learning and signal some knowledge of a platform. It won't replace evidence that you have built and validated models on real data. Work projects with measured results tend to matter more in interviews.
